Benue Pogrom: The Way Forward
Benue Pogrom: The Way Forward! A Call on Our Leaders!
By Ogiri John Ogiri.
Your Excellencies Distinguished senators David Mark,Barnabas Gemade and George Akume, the Benue state Governor, Dr Samuel Ortom, current and former members of the Benue state Executive Council, our Honorable members of the Federal House of Representatives and Benue State's House of Assembly, Your Royal Highnesses, members of the Benue state traditional council, youth groups, civil society organizations and other well-meaning Benue citizens. It is no longer news that, a war has been declared on our people; that a battle line has been drawn in the Benue valley between the well-armed and highly protected Jihadhists and the unarmed and vulnerable Benue citizens. They want our land by force, they don't want us to go to Church, they don't want us to go to school anymore, they don't want us to go to farm anymore but our land we can't surrender. So they kill us every day.
I would like to use this medium, therefore, to appeal to you to rise to the occasion by making more efforts to help us. How can you help us?
The first major step is for you to come together irrespective of party affiliations. Once you become united, then we can be certain that we can defeat these enemies of our land.
Another way you can help is to train and equip our hardworking vigilante groups with the necessary weapons so that they can defend our vulnerable communities against attacks, since it has become obvious that the Nigerian security agencies, as they are currently constituted, can not protect us anymore.
Finally, there is an urgent need to bring this unwarranted genocide to the attention of the United Nations Human Rights Commission (that is, if that has not been done already). We must let the whole world know what is happening to us in the Benue valley.
Almost as a corollary, a proper investigation should be carried out to determine who is culpable and behind the support base of these ruthless killers. A stitch in time still saves nine.
I hope that this write-up get to you.
Long live Benue state!
God bless Nigeria!
