Intellectual Neo-colonialism and Nigerian Politics: The Chatham House in Britain.

Image
By Professor Toba Alabi. One of the most outstanding authorities on the Western capitalist imperialism in relation to the crisis of development in Africa is Walter Rodney. In his epic work titled 'How Europe Underdeveloped Africa', he analysed the genesis, dimension and effects of the European exploitation of Africa. The African contact with Europe started in 1444 AD and since this period, Africa has consistently been oppressed by Europe in various ways. These oppressive tendencies have taken various forms and dimensions. Africa lost millions of its citizens to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Millions of them are currently in Europe, North America and South America as second-class citizens as a result of the legacy of the slave trade. In addition to this, the mineral resources of the continent were looted by the colonial powers for the development of their own countries. The distortion that attended direct colonialism in Africa are monumental. The worldview and the

Know His/Her Genotype Before Getting Intimate

By Ogiri John Ogiri.  When meeting for the first time, most singles talk about a lot of things. They ask several questions and talk about many things. But there's one question most singles neglect at first meeting. It is that bordering on genotype. Many think that the question on genotype can be saved for a later date when they become more Intimate. I disagree with this.  I believe that the first question to ask in a relationship is " what's your genotype?" If there's any trace of "S" in your genotypes, call off that relationship. It's better to break now and be happy later than to get married and be sad forever. Yes I'm aware that there are some men of God who usually tell some people to pray so that God can change their genotypes. Ignore them. It's a scam. It's a dangerous trap of faith. It's going to ruin your happiness in marriage.  I understand they try very hard to mesmerise you with that " what God cannot do doesn't ex

Money, Power and Sex: A Trinity of Vice and Virtue that can Alter Men

By Ogiri John Ogiri  Every man is an honourable man until he meets money, power and sex. These three things, how he conducts his quest for them and how he behaves after acquiring them, can reveal his true nature and character. If money, power and sex were a burning furnace of fire and men were thrown into it, the man who comes out unscathed and unstained would be a saint in a community of sinners. Poverty of money, power and sex can be humbling to a man but his possession of them can birth a pride capable of altering his once humble attitude even to the surprise of many of his most trusted friends and foes. Only a few men can conquer and control the intoxication of money, power and sex. These are the men who know the value of contentment both in moments of poverty and plenty. There is therefore no need for anyone to feel surprised if his or her friend almost suddenly starts acting snobbishly after acquiring these prized possessions for, indeed, the man of honour and integrity, the man

An Indisputable Value of Scarcity

By Ogiri John Ogiri  As a student of Economics, one thing the Paradox of Value has taught me is that, what is common, however essential to life it may be, is usually not appreciated or treasured by consumers. On the other hand, what is scarce usually commands a higher price and is usually treasured by consumers. I have seen and continue to observe this play out in the behaviour of consumers towards water and gold, or water and petrol. Sometimes, I cannot help sympathising with water. How can something be so essential yet so underpriced, undervalued and often taken for granted? But such is the reward for being too commonly available. Those who have experienced acute water shortages, and still do, understand the absolute meaning of value in relation to water, not those who swim in water without end. The bottom line is this; if you are too available in a relationship, you can be taken for granted even if you are the life support in such a relationship. People tend to value what they can

All Men/Women are the Same: Correcting a Serious Error in Logic and Making Our Relationships Work.

Image
Image Credit: India Today By Ogiri John Ogiri.  I do not intend to drag you into the noble but tasking field of Logic by the title of this piece. The reason is that, though I do philosophy by virtue of existential experience, yet I am not a philosopher by training. I do not consider myself learned in the art and science of pure Philosophy. I am only a student of Economics learning how to solve society's economic problems of scarcity in the presence of unlimited wants. Therefore, I leave logic for logicians and philosophers, whose intellectual responsibilities it is to pontificate and contextualise philosophy so that issues can be understood in their proper contexts without creating unnecessary confusions.  Having said that, let me go straight to the topic that warranted this piece: All men/ Women are the same. To begin with a personal experience, in 2014 during my National Youth Service Corp programme in Gombe State, while on an evening promenade in FCE (Technical), I me

A Way Out of Corruption

Image
By Ogiri John Ogiri  This may sound uncomfortable but corruption does not originate in the boardroom. It originates in our individual corrupt tendencies with the bedroom as an epicentre. We see these corrupt tendencies at work when we do businesses with people, sell or buy things in the market as well as in our personal relationships with others. Acts of corruption in boardrooms in both public and private institutions are merely a climax of our individual propensities towards corruption hatched in the inner recesses of our minds but first operationalized in our bedrooms. Generally speaking, Corruption follows a hierarchy that flows from bottom to the top. In other word, it is a bottom-top chain of command thing. After all, if charity could and should begin at home, we cannot and should not excuse its opposite not to equally begin at home. Therefore, to kill corruption at the top, we must first make efforts to extricate from the minds of our citizens those tendencies that fa
