An Open Letter to our Ex-President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan
Your Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan Sir,
As conversations and political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum, your name has once again surfaced in national discussions, with some individuals and groups reportedly urging you to return to the presidential race. While this may appear flattering on the surface, many Nigerians who genuinely admire and respect your legacy are deeply concerned about the motives behind these calls. I am one of these Nigerians.
Your Excellency Sir, the last thing you should and would ever want to do is destroy your hard-earned legacy by jumping into the 2027 presidential race. Those urging you to contest do not mean well for you. They merely want to use you as a pawn in a political chess game to satisfy their selfish interests. Let us be honest: anyone who thinks you would descend so low as to become a spoiler against Mr. Peter Obi in 2027 is simply mistaken. You are far wiser and more statesmanlike than that.
Your Excellency Sir, before you listen to these voices, kindly remember that many of the same people encouraging you today were among those who saw nothing good in your administration in 2015. Despite your genuine intentions and sincere efforts, they ganged up against your government, demonized your leadership, and shamelessly labeled you “ corrupt" and "clueless.”
These were the same disgruntled individuals who publicly mocked your life by staging rallies with coffins and boldly declaring your political obituary while you were still alive. Your beloved mother was deeply traumatized by that cruel and shameful spectacle.
Sir, have they truly changed? I do not believe they have.
They are not asking you to contest because they genuinely want you to lead again or because they intend to vote for you. They are urging you to run simply to prevent Mr. Peter Obi from emerging strongly on the platform of the coalition. Their strategy is to divide the votes from your region while fully knowing they have no intention of working for your victory. This is part of a broader political calculation to ensure that the opposition never becomes united. If they truly loved you and sincerely wanted you back in office, why are they not asking you to contest under the ruling party? Why specifically under the coalition platform?
Your Excellency Sir, many Nigerians still love and respect you deeply. In 2015, you saved this nation from possible violence with a single phone call. You lived by your noble conviction that your ambition was never worth the blood of any Nigerian. That is why you conceded even while votes were still being counted.
For that singular act of patriotism and statesmanship, history will forever honour you.
You left behind a democratic legacy that remains one of the brightest moments in Nigeria’s political history; it is a legacy many of us hope will endure and outlive this generation. Kindly protect and preserve that legacy by declining any invitation to contest in 2027, so you may continue to occupy your respected place as an elder statesman and a voice of national conscience.
I sincerely hope this message reaches you, Sir.
Yours respectfully,
Ogiri John Ogiri
